Call me Afriyie, no more Wutah

One young man currently feeling extremely good and barely able to contain the enthusiasm generated by his new direction in music and image change is Frank Kojo Afriyie Osei, known in Showbiz circle as Wutah Peevee. He had been on the quiet since the Wutah since the Wutah duo (Wutah Kobby was the other half) split about two years ago but he is now off a sparkling new start with simple new showbiz name - Afriyie - and a guitar-dominated single about love he calls “Love Of My Life”. The song is part of an extended Play (EP) four song album to be released by the end of next month, and a culmination of what Afriyie said had been a period of staying away from the public eye to add value to himself as a musician. Over the period, he went through rigorous vocal training and a guitar teacher helped him improve his playing. So apart from unveiling his new name for work, he is poised to roll out as a more competent musician eager to spread his wings far and wide. “I had to toy with a number of names before settling on Afriyie. It is part of my name already but I want to project myself now with that. My plan is to take something charming from Africa that would rival all those acclaimed good vocalists out there on the international scene,” Afriyie told Showbiz in a chat. Wutah came to national attention through the Nescafe Africa Revelation contest of 2004. Their debut album, Anamontuo, endeared them to music lovers across board. Tracks like Goosie Gander and Adonko became very popular and Big Dream won the Best Reggae Song honour at the 2005 Ghana Music Awards. The follow-up album, Burning Desire, contained equally attractive songs like Kotosa, Abibifuo Twenebo, Aseda Ndwom, Carpenter and Lovers Lane. Despite the apparent rapport between the duo in the public eye, they seemed to be drifting apart at a certain time. There was enough confirmation the final split had come when Wutah Kobby released a 12-track solo album called Selfless Bliss with a well-loved song, Tsotsoo, on it. Afriyie is now managed by Uhuru Africa Entertainment headed by Richard Agyeman-Berko. He said the idea is to help the artiste create a brand that is sellable anywhere. “We were in Equatorial Guinea sometime last year and Afriyie got good reception with the stuff he presented. He is a wonderful singer and we trust he will go far with his new image and approach to making music.” Afriyie himself was confident that with the amount of hard work he was putting into rebranding himself, he was on the highway to realising his fullest potential and creating big waves everywhere.
