Calm has returned to the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS). Police on Saturday fired tear gas to disperse protesting students on the university campus. Violence broke out when the university’s Electoral Commission said it had run out of ballot papers during the Students’ Representative Council elections. The students rejected the EC’s claim saying the complaint was a pretext to rig the elections in favour of some aspirants. According to the students the, EC’s claim was unjustified because enough money had made available for the work of the EC. Following their suspicions, the students decided to protest against the EC but the Wa police fired tear gas to disperse them. That brought about tension on campus on Saturday but Joy News’ Rafiq Salam reported that by late Sunday evening there was calm in and around the campus. He said the atmosphere was serene with students going about their activities without fear. Meanwhile the elections have been suspended for now.
