The plight of the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah, a slum in Accra, can not be easily overlooked considering the deprived conditions they live in.
They are at the mercy of poor sanitation and communicable diseases and in their quest to make a living; they usually overlook these daily dangers.
One of the country’s endowed gospel musicians, Celestine Donkor is embarking on a campaign to put a smile on the faces of residents of the area.
Come May 25, African Union Day, at the Royal House Chapel (Ahenfie) in Accra, Celestine Donkor will stage the first of an annual concert dubbed Celestial Praize to raise funds for the slum dwellers at Sodom and Gomorrah.
Asked the rationale for the initiative, Celestine Donkor told Myjoyonline.com in an interview that, she “watched a news item on TV. I saw the plight of the kids, where the porters left their kids before they could go out to sell… its very pathetic. Some of the kids were naked and they sleep on the bare floor.”
“It touched my heart and I thought we could raise some money to buy some basic needs like mattresses to make their lives comfortable,” adding that the initiative is dear to her heart.
On the concert night, which is free, other renowned gospel giants including Cecelia Marfo, Uncle Ato, Philipa Baafi, OJ, Ike Nanor, Martin Hayford, Ever Flourishing Choir and ICGC Kwashiman Choir will join Celestine Donkor to treat patrons to an array of good quality music.
The Supernatural singer disclosed that she hopes to raise GH¢20,000 and promised to channel all the proceeds to the head porter’s kids at Sodom and Gomorrah.
Celestine hinted that, that she envisaged the initiative to be long-term project that would be dedicated to bettering the lives of the people there.
That she is because the initiative is part of her Celestine Donkor Ministry. She hopes to provide the basic needs of the kids, To relocate the children to a structure to be built by the initiative and lastly to register initiative as an NGO.
This NGO through the support of volunteers will educate and provide care for the kids of the head porters.
The whole campaign is ably supported by the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs.
