Inside Accra’s main train station, a group of healthcare givers are busy at work, screening patients for various diseases.
The doctors and nurses are from the Center Clinic, a facility offering general and specialist healthcare services in the central business district of Accra.
On Saturday September 10, hundreds of traders and head porters, who often resorted to self-medication when ill, got the opportunity to see doctors and receive free treatment. This was the third health screening exercise by the clinic. The first was done in December 2020 to launch the facility.
The patrons at Saturday’s event – from the young to the old – commended the facility for its CSR initiative.
“I’m very grateful to the clinic for supporting us this way. Many people have diseases they do not even know about. Such exercises help to discover them,” Eugenia Mensah, a patron, told JoyNews.
Another patient said: “I came here to screen, not for the general check-up. I only came here for my eye testing.”
“My screening was just done. I’m now going to see the doctor. I wish they could come around regularly,” Kweku Boateng, a patron, said.
Driven by a need to contribute to society, the hospital said it would extend its health screening campaign to many other parts of the capital.
A medical officer at Center Clinic, Dr. Eugene Offer, said the clinic was committed to assisting people in the central business district to get the best healthcare.
“It’s all about impact, getting healthcare to people in the market, people who cannot afford that much. Here, everything we do is an outreach. It’s an act of love. We also want to ensure good quality healthcare. We’re giving back to everyone around us,” he said.
The clinic offers eye and general medical care but officials hope to add more services this year.
A breast cancer screening exercise will be carried out in October, the Pink Month.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is marked in countries across the world, and helps to increase attention and support for awareness, early diagnosis, and treatment as well as palliative care for women facing this disease.
The Center Clinic’s last health screening exercise this year, will be in December.
