The Chief of Mumford near Apam, Nana Edwey X, has appealed for Police protection against an alleged plan to assassinate him by some group of people of the town.
According to the chief the situation has currently compelled him to leave Mumford to seek asylum at a place he refused to disclose.
Making the appeal in an interview with Ghana News Agency at Apam before leaving for his hideout, Nana Edwey said on November 6 this year, at about 1630 hours, a group of people from the town armed with stones, clubs and other offensive weapons besieged his private residence, but he managed to escape.
He said considerable damages were caused to his building, car and the electricity meter at his house. The chief said the reason for his attacked followed a ban he placed on the celebration of the annual Akwambo festival of the chief and people of the town, scheduled to have taken place between Nov. 6 and 9 this year. Nana Edwey explained that he placed the ban on the celebration of the festival because of a chieftaincy issue between the two Asafo Companies of the town, which was pending before the Judicial Committee of Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Council at Gomoa Assin.
He said while the issue was pending, the Asafo companies and some elders of the town instituted destoolment charges against him at the same committee, and also stopped him for the sale of lands in the town.
The chief said some police personnel from Apam were therefore dispatched to the town to maintain peace and order, but as soon as they left the following day, the people lunched the attack during which they missed him narrowly. According the Apam police no arrest has been made, while they continu= e their investigations.
