The proportion of female students intake at the College of Technology Education (COLTEK) of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) in Kumasi has been increasing steadily over the years.
Out of a total number of 2,509 students admitted for the 2010/2011 academic year, 29.6 percent of them were females as against the total number of 2,091 students admitted in the 2009/2010 academic year where 27.9 percent were females.
Addressing the 17th matriculation ceremony of the university in Kumasi, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, said it was the desire of the university to have equal numbers of both females and males assessing the various programmes offered.
He explained that with, regard to graduate programmes, out of the 148 students admitted for the 2010/2011 academic year, 23.6 percent were females.
"We shall consciously and systematically improve female intake for our graduate programmes to improve on the balance between female and male students", the Vice Chancellor assured.
He explained to the fresh students that the matriculation ceremony signified their formal admission to the university and urged them to be of good behaviour and obedient to authority at the university.
Professor Asabere-Ameyaw reminded the fresh students that they had the right to protection through fair procedures against arbitrary and capricious academic evaluations.
"However, by our culture, you are expected to express your sentiments in a reasonable and courteous manner. You are expected equally to examine and discuss all questions that are of interest to you", he added.
He advised the fresh students to show academic integrity and refrain from cheating during examinations.
