The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has inaugurated a special committee to review the acts and statutes that established the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The 20–member team is tasked to propose amendments to the 61 year old legislation to better position the KNUST to serve the tertiary education needs of Ghanaians. Almost sixty years after its inception in 1961, the act establishing the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ACT 80, has seen no review. Consequently the University has been constrained in its determination to offer higher education to reflect changing dynamics of 21st Century for the country’s socio-economic development. Otumfuo Osei Tutu at the inauguration ceremony said the mandate of the university has suffered as a result. He particularly cited succession to key positions of responsibility which continues to be manipulated to suit the interest of people in authority. “The statutes of the University, a sacred document that guides the administration and management of the University as well as its academic life, have undergone changes that are not consistent with the spirit of the parent act establishing the University”, said the Otumfuo. The Asantehene noted a number of critical and far-reaching changes have been made since the promulgation of the 2004 statutes by the council of the university, and changes continue to this day, rendering ACT 80s currency and efficacy a subject of consternation. He believes other schedules in the current statutes also hinder and militate against effective administration and management of faculties, colleges and the University as a whole. According to Otumfour some of these critical issues are up for consideration and review in view of the anticipated changes in the collegiate system and current trends in University management and administration. Later in an interview with Luv News, Chairman of the Committee, Paapa Dadson, said all stakeholders of the university in particular, and tertiary education, in general will be consulted in the review process. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations in November this year. Story by Kwabena Owusu-Ampratwum/Luv Fm/Ghana
