The Western Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Japheth Baidoo has said that scores of Ivoirian refugees are trooping into Ghana as result of a deepening insecurity in that country.
Mr. Baidoo told Adom News on Friday that the fighting has intensified as a result of the capture of former President Laurent Gbagbo.
He said the political tension has been heightened by the perception of northerners that internationally acclaimed President Alassane Ouattara may not be his own man and would be dictated to by UN and French.
Mr. Baidoo said “the situation has worsened forcing more of the Ivorians, especially students to come to Ghana.”
Meanwhile the Ampain camp where majority of the refugees are camped, is peaceful, according to Mr. Baidoo.
He stated “the Food and Agriculture Organisation has delivered enough food for the refugees to benefit.”
Easter celebrations at Ampain Camp.
Ampain Refugee Camp Manager, Mr. Kelly Forson has told Adom News that the euphoria of the Easter celebrations has set precedence in the Ivoirian camp.
According to him, the Christians among them have set off to various church meetings to remember the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.
For the most part of the church activities they sang hymns and praises to God thanking him for the gift of life.
Some food items like maize, rice, salt have been shared to them to cook for their families after their church meetings.
Mr. Forson said “some religious bodies have also made donations to the camp consisting of food, water and other items to supplement what they have to make the Easter enjoyable.”
In another development, work was said to be ongoing at the camp to raise additional tents to accommodate more Ivoirians trooping in through the western corridor as a result of intensified fighting after Gbagbo’s arrest.
He said “the increasing numbers is putting pressure on resources and I am appealing to charitable organizations to come and offer foods especially rice because they are not used to eating maize.”
At their leisure the refugees often visit the beach and engage in other games and sporting activities.
