Neurosurgeons at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) are optimistic that the surgery aimed at separating a set of twins conjoined at the head, will be successful.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show, Friday, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, stated that although the country has competent health experts to carry out the surgery, lack of necessary equipment has stalled the process.
"It is an enormous task, but it can be done when we get all the resources required," he said.
This is the first time doctors at the Ridge hospital will conduct such a specialised operation.
The first-ever carried out in the country was in 1999 when a set of girls, Linda and Lydia were born conjoined.
They were born at the Atua Government Hospital in Odumase-Krobo in the Eastern Region but it took the intervention of neurosurgeons at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to separate them.
During the morning show, Dr Kaba Akoriyea emphasised the need to carry out the surgery.
He said a successful operation on the twins will not only save the lives of the kids, but will also boost the confidence of Ghanaians in the country's health sector.
"It is very important for us as a country to note that we are not only talking about the twins, but we are talking about Ghana being a hub for medical expertise or tourism or any other kind of medical need for the sub-region and beyond.
This is one of the most complex and complicated surgeries you can have but if we are able to obtain the required equipment to deal with this, we can deal with any other type of surgery that comes our way," he said.
Meanwhile, an amount of GH¢3,000.000.00 is need to pay for the surgery to enable them live independently.
Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea who spoke with Kojo Yankson, said the operation will be done in various phases, adding that the processes involved will take a period of one and a half years.
“A minimum of 4 to 5 stages of surgery will be required because when you view the image, the first thing you see is that their heads are joined.”
To help raise the needed funds for the surgery, one can contribute via mobile money to the father of the twins, Samuel Addo.
