The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced a significant initiative aimed at providing relief to individuals affected by the recent spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
The government will be constructing 1,000 housing units to accommodate those displaced by the incident.
Speaking at a press conference held in Accra on Monday, September 30, Oppong Nkrumah expressed the government’s dedication to alleviating the hardships endured by the displaced individuals.
He noted that the provision of adequate housing is a crucial step in supporting the victims as they recover from the impacts of the dam spillage.
The Minister assured the public that the government is prioritising this project to ensure timely assistance.
In addition to the initial 1,000 units, the minister revealed that phase two of the housing project has been approved, which will include an additional 1,010 housing units.
This expansion demonstrates government's commitment to providing long-term solutions for the affected communities.
The commencement certificate for this phase has already been secured, allowing the project to move forward.
Currently, the government is finalising the necessary procedures with the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and addressing land acquisition matters to initiate construction for the second phase.
These steps are essential to ensure that the project can commence smoothly and meet the urgent housing needs of those impacted by the dam spillage.
“Now already, 115 [housing] units are under construction and they have gone past the 60 per cent mark. Those are the units that I went to break ground for in April 2024. 115 of those units.
"We have also approved phase 2 of 1,010 units and we have received the commencement certificate for phase 2.”
