The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is the latest institution to roll out measures, comprising a ban on all international conferences to combat the threat of coronavirus.

Management of the school in a statement on Friday banned all gatherings on campus until further notice.

Authorities on Friday outlined that “all international conferences to be hosted by the university have been suspended until further notice.”

These include funerals, sporting activities, awards night, dinners, hall weeks and other outdoor events.

The communique signed by the Registrar also directed that all planned academic and non-academic excursions in and outside the university campus be called off indefinitely.

Other measures instituted by KNUST include a directive for all incoming and exchange programmes as well as international visits of foreign partners, professors and collaborators are called off temporarily.

The Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that two cases of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) have been confirmed in the country.

The cases, according to the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, were confirmed on Thursday, March 12, 2020.

"Laboratory results of the two confirmed cases were received at the same time from the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research. Both individuals returned to Ghana - one from Norway and the other from Turkey - so these are imported cases of COVID-19.

Other public institutions have triggered similar protocols ahead of KNUST’s move.

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) on March 11 banned all international conferences on campus as part of measures to tackle any threat of coronavirus on campus.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has also shut down elevators in a move to de-densify all public places on campus.
