A group of army officers in Guinea-Bissau is reported to have detained the chief of staff at the army headquarters in an apparent coup attempt. Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Junior is said to have been taken to an unknown destination. The location of President Malam Bacai Sanha is not known. Heavily armed troops attempted to gain access to the UN headquarters, where a former head of the navy has fled. Guinea-Bissau has had a series of coups since independence in 1974. President Nino Viera was killed in March 2009 and fresh elections were held in June last year. Source: BBC
