A near-fatal accident occurred on Friday afternoon at the Ashaiman Overhead involving a Toyota V8 with registration number GN 76-16 and a commercial vehicle with registration number GS 3642-12.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident happened amid heavy traffic when an ambulance transporting a deceased person, accompanied by a police escort, was speeding through the area.
In the attempt to clear a path, the Toyota V8, which was reportedly also moving at high speed, collided with the commercial vehicle and veered into a roadside gutter.
The driver of the commercial vehicle, Frank Amoah, told reporters that he had stopped to give way to the ambulance when the Toyota V8 suddenly crashed into his vehicle.
He noted that his mate sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
However, the driver of the Toyota V8 gave a different account, alleging that one of the escort motorbikes struck his vehicle while attempting to control traffic. He said he swerved to avoid further collision but ended up hitting the commercial vehicle.
It has since been confirmed that the Toyota V8 belongs to the founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Mr. Ayariga said he was on his way to an event when he received news of the accident.
Both vehicles have since been towed from the scene. Police say investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash.
