On day two of the "Say No To Galamsey" demonstration, which began on September 21, several members were arrested by the police on Sunday.
The demonstration, organized by Democracy Hub, a local civil advocacy group, aimed to pressure the government to take stronger action against illegal mining (galamsey), which has heavily polluted many of the country’s water bodies.
On Saturday, demonstrators had planned to picket at Jubilee House but were stopped by police at the 37 Military Hospital intersection, where a blockade was set up to prevent them from advancing.
Their actions caused significant inconvenience for motorists and commuters in the area.
In response, the police cleared all the barricades and instructed the demonstrators to relocate to a designated area for their protest. However, when they refused to comply, several were arrested.
