A Security Analyst, Adam Bonaa, has entreated the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to be swift in prosecuting Police officers who commit crimes.
In an interview on the AM Show, Thursday, Mr. Bonaa said officers who flout the law should be dealt with accordingly, to serve as a deterrent for civilians.
He was reacting to an incident in which a Police officer drove into bystanders at Atico Junction, leaving one person dead with others severely injured.
“I will want this issue to be thoroughly investigated. We shouldn't have a situation where when Police officers are attacked, all of us scream and say the culprits should be dealt with.”
“We want a situation where when officers also commit crimes, they're not shielded. We want to see Commanding Officers swiftly coming out to tell the truth. But unfortunately, not much has been done with regards to the Commanding Officer at Odorkor coming out to say they can't give us information.”
He said, “just as when civilians commit crimes, we're happy to publish their names, when Police officers also commit crimes, their Commanding Officer should publish their names.”
The Inspector-General of Police and some senior officers on Saturday visited the families and victims of the Atico accident to sympathise with them.
One of the victims, Kofi Mensah, who is on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, was the first to be visited by the team. They interacted with the victim and his family. The IGP indicated that the Police will bear the total cost of the victim’s treatment.
The next visit was to Mataheko, a suburb of Accra, where the officers met the other surviving victim, John Mensah, at his residence.
Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare and his team also visited the family of the late Dora Owusua, who lost her life while receiving treatment.
The Police have since started investigating the matter.
