At the 2021 Art of Technology conference in Lagos, Nigerian data scientist Doris Onuoha was honoured with the Tech Innovation of the Year Award—one of the most distinguished recognitions in Nigeria’s technology ecosystem. Sponsored by the Lagos State Government, the award celebrates individuals who have made exceptional, industry-defining contributions through technology and innovation.
This year’s accolade recognised Onuoha’s groundbreaking work at the intersection of data science and financial technology, where she has led transformative advancements in fraud detection, credit risk modelling, and data-driven automation within West African banking systems. Her innovative frameworks have reshaped operational processes and driven measurable impact across Nigeria, Ghana, and the broader region.
The Tech Innovation Award is known for its selective and rigorous evaluation process, involving peer nomination, technical vetting, and jury evaluation by leading technology and policy experts. With hundreds of nominees each year, only a small fraction reach the final stage, and even fewer receive the honour, placing recipients like Onuoha among an elite echelon of high-impact professionals.
Industry leaders and policymakers present at the event applauded Onuoha’s leadership in applying advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to address systemic challenges in the banking sector.
Her work has set new benchmarks for scalable, responsible innovation, earning her recognition as one of the top data scientists operating at the nexus of technology and finance in the region.
In her acceptance speech, Onuoha remarked: “Innovation is not just about building technology; it’s about creating solutions that matter. This award is for every young professional working behind the scenes to drive meaningful change with data.”
More than a personal milestone, the Tech Innovation Award affirms Onuoha’s sustained contributions to digital transformation in highly regulated industries. Her record of deploying cutting-edge tools to solve complex problems reflects not only deep technical expertise but also a rare ability to translate innovation into lasting industry value.
With this honour, Doris Onuoha joins a select group of professionals whose work exemplifies excellence in African technology, particularly in the banking sector, where precision, compliance, and innovation must co-exist.
