The workers union of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is threatening to disconnect the private facilities of the Ashanti Regional Minister if it is found that he owes the Company money for electricity bills.
This threat comes after the Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, denied allegations that he owes electricity bills at some of his private residencies.
Mr Osei Mensah clarified that, apart from his Jachie residence, all his other estates are on prepaid meters.

“The actual reading on the meter as of yesterday was 23,498 units. The bill that they submitted which definitely the meter would have been read far earlier is 25,355 units, a whopping difference of more than 1,900 units."
“I am asking ECG to withdraw, retract and apologise to me, else I will do the needful to redeem my reputation," Mr Osei-Mensah said.
However, the Senior Staff Association of ECG-Ashanti West, represented by Chairman Yussif Osmanu Abdulai, stated on Luv FM that the power company is currently reconciling the meter readings from the minister’s residence.
If it is found that he owes, they will not hesitate to disconnect power to his home.
"Where he has said he has a prepaid meter is his house at Ahomaso, and I am told he has another place in his hometown I didn’t know about that, but he mentioned that he has been given a fraudulent bill, so I want to take my time and check that one but if he’s owing, he will be disconnected," he said.
Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is refuting claims made by the Minister that the company deliberately disconnects power to the residences of the President and Vice-President in Kumasi whenever they are in the region.
"He gave an instruction that whenever the President and the Vice are in town, we should make sure that there is stable power at where they lodge and he painted the picture as if we sabotaged the President and the Vice President."
"But they don’t even inform us when the President or the Vice President will be in town. We will pick the information from elsewhere and be scanning through to know where they are to protect the feeders that serve the places they will be lodging," he added.
