Education Minister Dr Yaw Adutwum has invited the management of the public universities and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to a meeting on Thursday to resolve the qualms on the increment of fees.
The Commission has directed all public tertiary institutions to review fees for the next academic year by a maximum 15 per cent increment.
This directive follows several concerns raised by university students and leaders over the increment of fees by public universities.
University of Ghana students accused the school authorities of charging more than the approved fee increment by Parliament.
Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, Kwesi Kwarteng in an interview with Joy News said the Ministry has intervened to resolve the matter.
“The Ministry has picked information, especially referencing the concerns that came from the student leadership that some of the universities are not complying with this directive and so consequently the Ministry has invited all the parties involved. The universities involved refer to KNUST, UCC, University of Ghana and cumulatively we have five universities in this category.
“University of Ghana, for instance, they are not denying the fact that they have indeed usurped what Parliament has decided but they are giving us the justification explaining why they are unable to go by the directive of Parliament,” he said.
Meanwhile, the management of the University of Ghana has dared persons criticising the university’s new fee charges as illegal to take them to court.
Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Gordon Awandare justified the increment and said they are ready to challenge anybody who thinks otherwise in court.
