Electoral violence at UDS campus

Election related violence has broken out on the Campus of the University of Development Studies. Fighting broke out Saturday April 12, 2008 during elections for SRC executives when the University’s Electoral Commission announced shortage of ballot papers during the elections. Dissatisfied with the explanation, students accused the commissioner of attempting to rig the elections in favour of new officials of the SRC. The students claimed shortage of ballot papers could not have been an excuse because the commissioner has received enough funds for the exercise. The students clashed with police from the northern region who were sent there to keep the peace. The police subsequently fired tear gas and the students were forced to flee the campus. Speaking to Joy News, a student of the university who identified himself only as Yusif said he was speaking outside campus. He told Joy News that students have fled the campus and he could not tell what exactly was happening on the campus at the time he was speaking.
