A 47-year-old electrician has been remanded into prison custody by the Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality for defrauding five Nurses and a self-employed man at Asuofua, near Abuakwa.
Stephen Kwasi Anim pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretence and was expected to be brought back to the court presided over by Mrs Philomena Ansaah Asiedu on August 03, 2026.
Police Detective Chief Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, prosecuting, told the court that the complainants: Ellen Ohemeng, Tracy Boateng Dankwah, Hannah Owusuaah Afful, Philip Mandoh and Margaret Jagun, were Nurses, while Emmanuel Kyei Baffour was also self-employed.
He said all the complainants resided at Asuofua, while the accused person was an electrician residing at Adenta in Accra.
He said in August 2025, a fifth complainant, Margaret Jagun, saw the accused person advertising on ‘TikTok’ that he could help secure visas for persons who intended to travel abroad, so she expressed her interest and informed the other complainants.
The accused then came to Asuofua, met the complainants and assured them of his readiness to help them secure travelling visas for Austria and Holland.
They paid between GH¢5,000.00 and GH¢15,000.00, totalling GH¢70,000.00, but after collecting that amount, the accused person went into hiding, leaving the victims to conduct their own investigations.
On June 09, 2026, the accused person was located at Nsawam in the Eastern Region, and he was arrested and handed over to the police.
The prosecution said the accused person was sent back to the Asuofua police, and in his caution statement he admitted the offence.
After further investigations, he was charged and brought before the court.
