The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) have charged the legislative arm of government to accelerate processes to pass the Proper Human Sexual and Ghanaian Family Bill, 2021.
In a communique jointly issued by the two Councils on Tuesday, they expressed their enthusiasm over the decision to have a well-established law that confronts Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) practices head-on in Ghana.
According to the Councils, LGBTQ+ practices have been prohibited in the Holy Book and will gradually rundown the values and cultural systems in the country.
In view of this, the CCG and GPCC appealed to Parliament to safeguard what they described as cherished values of the country.
The Proper Human Sexual and Ghanaian Family Bill, 2021, was tagged as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill since it was made public.
But its promoters say it is in the nation's interest that an appropriate legal framework makes advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights illegal.
The eight legislators who drafted it officially laid before Parliament on Monday, August 2.
The bill is currently with the Parliamentary Committee that has since called on citizens to submit documents stating their positions on the bill.
The Councils, therefore, encourage all citizens to send their memos to Parliament in support of this bill to protect the nation from the corruption and moral decadence of same-sex unions.
“We call on all Ghanaians to pray for God's grace and intervention for the passage of the bill into law,” parts of the statement read.
Subsequently, they called on President Akufo-Addo to accent the Bill into should it be deliberated and passed by the legislature.
Meanwhile, about nine groups have petitioned Parliament, insisting that the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill is against the country's renowned slogan: freedom and justice.
The Human Rights Coalition argued that the Bill is in direct conflict with several constitutionally protected fundamental freedoms and human rights and is incompatible with many international human rights instruments to which Ghana is a State Party.
