Fear and panic have gripped the Nkawkaw Zongo community in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region, following a brazen shooting that left three Fulani men dead and a child hospitalised.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, near a veterinary shop close to the Nkawkaw Zongo Barracks, where the victims regularly gathered.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Wanto (47), Abubakari Abdallah (57), and Abubakar Mohammed (56). According to eyewitness accounts, masked gunmen ambushed the men, killing two instantly. The third victim managed to flee but was chased down and fatally shot moments later.
During the chaos, a young boy was caught in the crossfire and sustained serious gunshot wounds. He is currently receiving treatment at the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital.
The violent and public nature of the attack has left the community in shock, with many residents fleeing the area in fear of further violence. The killings have sparked urgent calls for government intervention, with some residents demanding either the relocation of the Fulani community or enhanced security measures to prevent future attacks.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West, Halidu Tamimu, has assured the public of swift action to improve safety. “We are working closely with the Minister for Communication, Honourable Sam George, and the CEO of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Richard Karikari Kevor, to install CCTV cameras along the Zongo–Akuajoo stretch to monitor activities and deter crime,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Nkawkaw Central Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation. Though the perpetrators remain at large, police say they are following several leads to establish a motive and bring the attackers to justice.
The tragic shooting has heightened tensions in Nkawkaw Zongo, with residents anxiously awaiting justice, reassurance, and the restoration of peace in their community.
