Five schools in the Akuapem South and West Akim districts in the Eastern Region have been connected to clean drinking water and hand washing stations at their school premises. In addition, three of the schools also had biogas toilet systems constructed. The projects were jointly sponsored by Coca¬Cola Africa Foundation, Water health Ghana and Deka Research technologies of USA at a total cost of $500,000. The beneficiary schools are the Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic schools at Pakro and the SDA and Catholic schools at Adieso, both near Nsawam. Speaking at the official handover ceremony at Pakro and Adeiso respectively, Andrew Racicot, the project manager of Deka Research Technology, said his company was delighted to have successfully installed the machines which would treat water from the Densu and Nteribor rivers for safe clean drinking water meeting WHO’s standards for the benefit of the school children. He said the five schools in Ghana were the first to have benefitted from anythingofthe sort anywhere in the world. In his remarks, Tom Blackstock, the project manager of the Coca-Cola Company which designed the water project said his company was delighted to be part of real life improvement in the communities. He said Coca-Cola’s avowed aim globally was to make tangible changes in the health and hygiene needs of the societies the company operates in. The General Manager of Water health Ghana, Mawunya Pupulampu, was happy that her organisation was involved in such a laudable project for school children. In his welcome address at the launch at Pakro, the chief of the town, Nana Lokko, said Pakro had been a very lucky town this year with multiples of assistance coming their way. He advised the school children to take very good care of the facilities they have received.
