The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) says it would cost the assembly approximately GH₵28 million to fix and install streetlights in the metropolis.
Many streets in the city have over the years been plunged into total darkness due to the malfunctioning of streetlights, prompting safety and security concerns at night.
The poor illumination on the streets and roads impede traffic movements, as motorists struggle to ply poorly-lit routes at night with security threats to commuters and residents.
Following an initial assessment of the retooling costs for the street light infrastructure in every street of the city, the Mayor, Richard Boadi, revealed on Luv FM that "we have received bills on the quantities needed for streetlights. The amount is huge, over 28 million cedis."
But the assembly has identified some key areas in the city that require urgent streetlight installations to beat down costs to 13 million cedis, while working to find resources to complete others.
Mr. Boadi says the assembly is hoping to raise adequate funds for works to commence immediately.
"I have identified every sensitive areas, including the ceremonial routes, which are Bantama to Prempeh College through to Sofoline. We have engaged some streetlight companies, so we can see how best we can stagger payment of the 13 million cedis," he said.
Meanwhile, the city continues to battle defunct traffic lights contributing to heavy vehicular congestion and preventable carnages in the metropolis.
