A former Sports Minister has condemned the Akufo-Addo administration for flying over 100 supporters to the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Nii Lantey Vanderpuye says it is wrong for government to have done that describing the move as “criminal.”
The Odododiodio MP in an interview on Asempa FM criticised the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, for disobeying government's white paper on the 2014 World Cup Commission of Enquiry.
"I wouldn't have sent supporters to Egypt if I were the Sports Minister, I would have respected the white paper," he said.
The vociferous MP says using taxpayers money to pay for supporters to Egypt for the 2019 AFCON is wrong following the recommendation of the white paper.
According to him, the decision was taken without a Parliamentary approval as such, the legislative arm of government is not aware of any money allocated to the Ministry for the travel.
“The supporters went to Egypt as tourists but at whose expenditure? This means the Minister took taxpayers money to take supporters on an excursion,” the Odododoi MP said.
The Dzamefe Commission report in 2014, was emphatic that the state should not use taxpayers’ money to send football fans to tournaments.
Instead, the Commission formed to investigate the Brazil 2014 World Cup fiasco suggested that, government rather considers private sponsors.
“We have over 1,000 Ghanaians living in Cairo alone, so why send supporters from Ghana?... If this is the man who took over from me then we have gone back,” he said.Latest Stories
