The Fulani community in Ghana is calling for the arrest and prosecution of people behind the alleged killing of some herdsmen recently in the Sekyere Central District of Ashanti Region.

The Fulani leadership says about five herdsmen have been killed in parts of the country in the last few months.

General Secretary of the Fulani group, Yakubu Musah Barry, is alarmed by incidents of farmer-herder clashes triggered by what he describes as unprovoked attack on Fulanis.

He spoke to the media after presenting a petition to Ashanti Regional Minister and the Police Command over the matter.

"There is no farm, no provocations. Nothing. They just killed this man and shot six animals," he said.

The attacks, according to Musah Barry, have become unbearable.

He says despite attempts by community leaders to seek amicable ways of resolving the differences, the attacks persist.

"We are law-abiding citizens. We the leadership believe in rule of law that is why I wrote a petition, submitted to the regional minister and regional commander that they should take immediate steps."

Musah Barry says the herdsmen are law-abiding but they may be forced to defend themselves if violence against them continues.

He says though they are capable of revenge, they want to allow the law to take its course.

"We are calling on the IGP to intervene. We are in an election year we need peace before during and after the election."

The community wants police to find the perpetrators in three weeks.

"I give three weeks for those perpetrators to be brought to book," Musah Barry said.
