Gabby Adjetey, former host of the Drive Time on Joy 99.7 FM, is back in the DJ's saddle at the station serving hot hits of all genres. Gabby, still possessing of his alluring voice as an added flavour is on a three-week vacation to Ghana from the United Kingdom. The tall, athletic-built lover of music tells of how he would use the next few days as a ‘refresher’ after his eight-year hiatus – he left the country in 2001. But while he tags the period as time for honing his music playing skills, his dexterity behind the console is too obvious to disguise as a comeback try. On Sunday, August 30, Gabby was up for Joy Beach Jam – which coincided with the Joy Old Skuuls Reunion beach party – and in three hours presented a seamless blend of hiplife, funk, reggae and in fact, everything – all in old school flavours. His brief visit presents an excellent reference to the period 1996 to 2001 when he did the Drive Time and crafted the show as a personality-centred but an audience-focused one. Gabby Adjetey is son of the late Speaker of Parliament and President of the Ghana Bar Association, The Rt. Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey, who passed on last year. Gabby holds a bachelor’s degree in Arts from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). After leaving the shores of Ghana in 2001 to the United Kingdom, Gabby acquired a second degree in Law (LLB) from the University of Westminster after which he did a Bar Vocation Course with the Inns of Court School of Law, London. He was called to the UK Bar in 2005. But before he makes any further climb on the academic ladder to pursue finance, Mr Adjetey believes a stint in banking will be an excellent precursor, as he puts his legal skills to use at Barclays UK. The broadcaster, lawyer and banker is married to a pretty woman from the Nii Owoo family with whom he has a twin - Peter Gabriel Nii Oko Adjetey and Lucy May Naa Akweley Adjetey. What certainly is still ‘available’ for his music-loving fans is that ‘excited’ voice, and a masculine physique which has a full representation on social-networking site Facebook. Gabby has exciting views of Ghanaian culture and cultural products including music. He believes tailoring Ghanaian music to suit the world market would definitely push the country’s presence a notch higher on the world music radar.
