The Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwaa, has called for the arrest of Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, over his recent remarks in parliament concerning the pollution of water bodies as a result of illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.
Madam Serwa argues that the MP’s comment during the emergency parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, is an "admission of guilt" and should lead to immediate accountability.
In an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV, she stated that duty bearers showed a lack of concern for the menace, as evidenced by Mr. Annoh-Dompreh's actions.
"I have a view that they (duty bearer) just don’t care. If you saw the recent ‘going ons’ in parliament where an MP will behave like a kindergarten child and be talking about who has poisoned the waters more than the other. This is an admission of guilt, and he should be arrested because you are saying that you have not poisoned as much as NDC has,” she said.
Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri while responding to the Minority's criticism of the government's handling of the galamsey menace, stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government had polluted water bodies more than the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has.
Madam Serwa criticised the ongoing political blame game, stating that the issue of water pollution and environmental degradation should not be reduced to partisan squabbles, adding that the menace can be solved when there is a political will.
"This is not a competition. The house is on fire. We face an existential threat. We should be solving the problem. We can solve it today if the political will is there," she indicated.
"Unfortunately, the political will isn’t there, and we the people who have a constitutional duty to protect and safeguard the environment have to take action now before we reach the point of no return," Madam Serwa warned.
