Authorities of Garden City Special School at Asokore-Mampong in the Ashanti region are appealing to government and philanthropists to assist the school to expand its facilities to accommodate more children. The school which was established about 34 years ago to educate mentally-handicapped people, now has 186 boarding students including 47 females. Staff accommodation is also a problem, though the school can boast of trained teachers with professional competencies to train the students. Headmistress, Mrs. Roseline Adjepong, says the inadequate infrastructure which has bedeviled the school for years affects the training schedules for students. According to her, about 300 applicants could not be admitted this academic year because of accommodation and classroom challenges. Mrs. Adjepong disclosed these when Med One Diagnostic Centre, a private laboratory service provider in Kumasi, presented assorted items valued at GH¢1,200 and a GH¢500 cash donation to the school. The presentation forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programmes. Chief Executive of Med One, Mr. Isaac Duah Fordjour said the Centre was motivated by the right of all people to education irrespective of their state of mind. He expressed gratitude to the staff and management of Richland and Providence Hospitals in the USA for their support in coming to the aid of the students. Meanwhile, Mr Francis Aboagye Kodua, the Managing Director (MD) of Med One announced the Center will be offering free treatment to students of the Garden City Special School.
