The Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), Carlos Sakyi has appealed to the Chief Justice, Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood and other law enforcement agencies to help the association to fight pirating in Ghana. Mr. Sakyi said piracy has killed the music industry in Ghana, adding that a large number of music icons were now unemployed due to the increasing rate of piracy in the country’s industry. He noted that piracy undermines the legitimate market, impoverished music owners and deprived government of tax revenue which is affecting the country financially. Mr. Sakyi was speaking to Adom Entertainment News at a cocktail party organized by Adom FM, for nominees in the Ghana Gospel Industry Awards 2012 at the Ange Hill Hotel on Friday, June 15. The cocktail treat which is one of the new additions to the awards this year was to afford the nominees the chance to get together, interact and bond in a relaxed environment devoid of any competitiveness. The event comes off at the Accra International Conference Centre on June 23. Illegal operators are said to be the cause of some musicians leaving the industry into another business activities. Mr. Sakyi said GHAMRO will continue to support the law enforcing agencies to deal drastically with all those who infringe on Ghana’s copyright laws.
