Dr. Mary Ashun, Principal of Ghana International School

The Principal of Ghana International School (GIS), Dr. Mary Ashun says the school is poised to make an impact in Ghana and beyond by being the model of excellence in education.

It is for this reason, she said, the school has partnered with the Ghana Education Service to train teachers.

The Principal was speaking in an interview with host Lexis Bill on JoyFM’s Personality profile on Thursday.

“One of my legacies at GIS will be to use our privilege as a school to help others. And that’s why our teachers also use their holiday time to go and teach teachers in the rural areas because we have made it our mandate that we (GIS) are an asset to Ghana," Dr. Ashun disclosed.

Dr. Mary Ashun is a Ghanaian-Canadian with over 25 years of international experience in education as a teacher, administrator and researcher.

She revealed that for children to succeed in education, parents and teachers must work together.

“There must always be that synergy between home and school”, she said.

She however, said it is mind-boggling that the aim of some teachers in Ghana is to fail their students.

“Even in the university, you hear some lecturers say, my course nobody passes."

"How could you be a teacher who has this as a goal,” Dr. Ashun questioned, explaining that the "whole essence of teaching is to get a child from point A to point B, and if you start by saying nobody passes your course, I find that preposterous”, she added.

The GIS Principal encouraged teachers to always find interesting ways to teach their students.

"As a teacher, when the bell goes and the kids don't leave the room, it means you've done something right.

"Most of the time, about 15 minutes to the time, most children start packing and immediately the bell goes, they're out of the door.

"But when you're teaching and it's so inspiring, interesting and you've captivated your audience, that bell will go, and the children will stay. And that's what you should aim for”, Dr. Ashun advised teachers.

She described her 8-year stay as Principal of GIS as incredibly fulfilling, and very tough.

Dr. Mary Ashun lavished praises on her team, saying, “I'm proud of my team at GIS. I mean the staff, right from the person who opens the gate to those tending the lawns and the teachers who are the frontline workers to the school's management who keep me in check.

"They are marvelous at what they do, experts in their field and always willing to learn. I'm proud of the team we have.”
