Ghana Olympic Committee ( GOC) has officially launched the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland.
Ghana’s participation in the Games starts with a call on the media to heavily promote all activities leading to the Games come next year
The launch comes a year ahead of the Glasgow games in a bid to allow athletes and officials, as well as the GOC and the National Sports Authority( NSA) enough time to prepare to better the country’s recent poor run of form in the multi sport event.
Our poor showing at recent London 2012 Olympic Games was attributed to the lack of adequate preparation by all stakeholders, a situation the GOC wants to avoid in upcoming competitions.
As a result, Ghana’s participation at the Commonwealth Games 2014 has been christened the Renaissance.
Minister of Youth and Sports Elvis Afriyie Ankra who officially launched Ghana’s participation in the Glasgow Games believes the nation has enough time to prepare and has challenged the GOC and the National Sports Authority to ensure Ghana athletes improve on recent poor performances in Olympic Games.
“Over the past few years, Ghana has not been performing well in international competitions and the purpose we are having this launch is break from the past.
To have a Renaissance that will help us take back our lost glory and our past pride. I’m throwing a challenge to the GOC and the NSA to ensure a well programmed preparation and excellent delivery at the games. We have one year to prepare and so excellence is what we are going to require from everybody. The media should also hold everyone accountable, we must go out there and deliver.”he told JOY Sports
But President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Professor Francis Dodoo would not set any specific targets but would want Ghanaian athletes to go to Glasgow with the aim of giving off their best.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games will be the largest multi sport ever held in Scotland. It will mainly be held at the Celtic and Hampden Parks over an eleven day
