Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, says Ghana is taking a major step in marine conservation with plans to establish its first Marine Protected Area by 2026 at Cape Three Points in the Ahanta West district in the Western region.
Speaking at the the Government’s Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, August 6, the Minister said the initiative is a key part of Ghana’s broader national conservation strategy and is based on both scientific research and extensive engagement with stakeholders.
"This initiative is part of a broader national conservation strategy and its based on scientific assessment and extensive stakeholder engagement."
She acknowledged the strong role civil society organisations have played in driving the process forward.
"To ensure ecological and socioeconomic benefits, consultations have been held with traditional leaders, local fishers, civil society, academia, and development partners. And some civil society partners have taken a strong lead in this process," the Minister said.
The Minister also announced that Ghana has formally joined the Regional Partnership for the Conservation of the Coastal and Marine Zone in West Africa (RAMPAO). The regional body promotes sustainable marine conservation practices across West Africa.
“By joining RAMPAO, Ghana is gaining access to valuable technical expertise, partnerships, and strategic support that will strengthen our ability to manage the marine protected area effectively,” the Minister added.
The Government Accountability Series provides a platform for sector ministers to present mid-year updates and preliminary assessments of the government’s performance, as part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability.
