The Rector of the University College of Management Studies (UCOMS) has enjoined Ghanaian lecturers to adopt innovative approaches in the impartation of knowledge and skills. Professor Nathaniel Kofi Pecku says today’s teaching methodology needs to be participatory in order to achieve excellent academic performance and prepare students adequately for the job market. According to him, the mere recall of information does not prepare the student adequately for the job market, emphasizing that the student would have benefited more if he or she could apply that knowledge in varied situations, analyze it logically and evaluate it. Prof. Pecku was addressing the 4th Matriculation Ceremony of the UCOMS, Kumasi Campus. Over 240 students have been admitted to pursue various courses at different levels. The Rector noted that apart from the knowledge students acquire, they also need to develop the right attitude and appropriate skills which will enable them to adjust to the community. This, he said, demands that lecturers sacrifice time to attend workshops and seminars for capacity building. “I am challenging you too to examine whether that aim of university education which is to train the mind satisfies the general aim of education which is to develop the whole person: this involves the acquisition of knowledge but also adds development of attitude and acquisition of skills. This implies developing cognitive, emotional and psychomotor aspects of the personality”, Prof. Pecku stated. He is confident the programme structure of UCOMS can produce graduates with appropriate competencies to sustain the Ghanaian economy. The University College plans to introduce new programmes during the 2011/2012 academic year, including Actuarial Science, Banking and Investment Management, and Oil and Gas. UCOMS, which is an offshoot of the Institute of Management Studies (IMS) is affiliated to the University of Education, Winneba and is also considering affiliating with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
