Within the last 7 months, Makafui Awuku and his team at Mckingtorch Africa has worked to develop a leather-like material from shredded LDPE and HDPE plastic waste which are mainly pure water sachet bags and regular waste shopping bags from the streets of Accra.

These bags are one of the major plastic material that pollutes the environment in the city of Accra.

Through a waste recovery project that allows for households and organizations to separate their waste and sell it to Mckingtorch Africa, Mckingtorch Africa shreds the waste and through a smokeless process under temperatures of over 300 degrees turns the materials into a sheet that has been innovated beautiful into sandals.

The project will be tied to a waste Buy-Back program to encourage people to segregate waste and not leave them in the environment so they can exchange it for money.

Mckingtorch Africa is looking to produce over 5000 pairs of this sandals in the next 12 months and recover over 7 tons of plastic waste bags through the project.

The simplest of designs of the sandals has 16 pieces of 12 inches square of recycled single-used plastic bags in it.

The Mckingtorch Footwear comes in designs called Sankofa, Borlaife, Duafe, Joy, Heritage and Freedom. The footwear is going to be available on their website at www.mckingtorchafrica.org and on their social media handles on Facebook and on Instagram with name Mckingtorch Africa.

The pre-order date is from the 7th of July 2020 and customers can have their sandals delivered or picked up from the 14th of July 2020.

Mckingtorch Africa is a social enterprise innovating a sustainable future and changing the narrative for Africa through environmental advocacy, recycling and upcycling training, arts and products from plastic waste, waste segregation partnerships with institutions, supports academic and institutional research in the area of waste management and partners with local government authorities and other institutions to installation and manage waste bins in the city of Accra.

The partners for the Mckingtorch Footwear project includes Total Petroleum who are supporting the project by providing us space at their 37 Service Station for 30 days as we exhibition, take orders and sell in their Solar Kiosk from the second week of July.
