Students of the Commonwealth Hall, University of Ghana, have expressed disappointment in the government for failing to take a decisive action on the intention by the university authorities to turn their hall into a graduate hall for mixed students. The students say days after they had met with Vice President, John Mahama, an alumnus of the hall himself, who asked them to pipe down on their intended demonstration to the seat of government (Castle), nothing positive has so far emanated from that meeting. Students of the hall popularly referred to us Vandals, have made clarion calls to various high profile personalities, including the former UN Boss, Kofi Annan, to impress upon the school’s authorities to rescind their decision. However, the authorities have remained adamant to all persuasions and correspondence, and insist that the decision would go on as planned – effective 2010/11 academic year. Benard Oduro Takyi, a former JCR president of the hall, told Joy News that students of the hall are disquiet about the silence of the presidency on the matter. “The students of Commonwealth Hall have been very disenchanted by how government has conducted itself with respect to this issue.” He appealed to the government to live up to its assurance to intervene on their behalf. Meanwhile, the special aide to the Vice President, John Jinapor, tells Joy News’s Dzifa Bampoh, Tuesday, that the presidency has not reneged on its promise and assured it will get to the bottom of the matter. He said a lot has gone on behind the scenes, diplomatically, to find a ‘win-win’ solution to the concerns raised by the students. He said, for instance, the office of the vice president has been in constant touch with the Old Vandals Association. “It takes a lot of time, it takes a lot of diplomacy, it takes a lot of lobbying, and consensus building to ensure that we arrive at an amicable solution. “I believe we can have a win-win situation. So we will plead with the students to exercise restraint whilst government and the president use whatever means possible and legitimate to ensure that their concerns are addressed.” He said the Vice President has briefed President Mills about the issue, since it happened in his absence.
