The government has introduced another set of initiatives under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme aimed at helping beneficiary farmers to expand their farms.
The initiative which involves a credit system for farmers is an improved method expected to address challenges facing farmers regarding access to funding.
Speaking to Journalists on the new system, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, explained that this system will boost food production and reduce the import dependence on food.
The new upgrade of the programme involves the establishment of some credit centres to help farmers at the local level reduce the stress in looking for funding.
The module which is a web-based application system will sanitise the distribution of farm inputs and seedlings in the industry.
According to the Dr. Acheampong, the system will help the country to improve its food security.
“We are moving away from subsidy to input credit programme and government shall take a percentage of the food invested to be stored at various warehouses across the country to help with food security. This new system is also aimed at reducing our import dependency as well as control market price of food commodities in our markets”.
The Minister also said the new module for the Planting for Food is a well thought through consultative system to improve the lots of farmers and increase food production.
He assured that efforts are being put in place to control the increase in prices of food at the market.
The farmer registration for the new system which is an updated version of the second phase of the Panting for Food and Jobs is expected to begin Tuesday, March 12, 2024, across the country.
