The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, says the government inherited a debt burden of about GH¢111 billion, placing significant pressure on public finances.
He said despite the debt obligations and the billions of cedis being committed to debt servicing, the government had continued to undertake major infrastructure projects across the country.
Speaking during an engagement with chiefs of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, Mr Buah said the government had paid more than GH¢2 billion in debt obligations in 2025 and 2026.
He added that the government is expected to pay more than GH¢10 billion next year, describing the repayment schedule as an obligation that cannot be avoided.

“All we have been doing is paying debt. Yet, in the midst of paying all the debt, we have been delivering several infrastructural projects,” he said.
Mr Buah argued that the financial obligations had not prevented the government from investing in infrastructure and other development projects.
He said the administration remained committed to using available resources to address infrastructure deficits and improve living conditions while meeting the country’s debt obligations.
The Minister’s comments come amid ongoing discussions over public debt management and the government’s ability to balance debt servicing with its development priorities.
