The Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu has called on government to enact review the laws to criminalise Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) in the country.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show Monday, he said although President Akufo-Addo has declared his stance not to legalise the act, an established law that bans the act will be a concrete step to prevent the activity from being infused in the Ghanaian culture.
He stressed that LGBTQI+ is an attack to the foundation to the family values and culture of the country and must be nipped in the bud before it becomes a ‘new normal’.
“We have a law which is not expansive or comprehensive enough to criminalise same sex with other related what we consider as deviant sex orientations.
“So we will call on the President to move a step further by urgently causing a review of the law to make it comprehensive to capture any other apparent or objectionable sex orientation which is likely to become part and parcel of our lives,” he told JoyNews’ Benjamin Akakpo.
Mr Aremeyaw Shaibu further indicated that the law, should it be enacted must include sexual orientations that are yet unknown.
Explaining that “we began with LGBT now we are talking about the ‘Q’, the ‘I’, the ‘A’ and the + to it. So this means the scope of this kind of practice is not known to us now and it is going to continue.”
“This is an attack on the very root of our family life so if we allow this to expand, it is not a matter of human right but it is something that is dangerous to society in general,” he said.
The Spokesperson lauded President Akufo-Addo’s decision openly declare his stance that same-sex marriage will never be legalized under his presidency.
On the same beat, the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values executive member, Dr Sam Onwona Ofori said Ghana must follow the steps of Uganda to definitely criminalise LGBTQI+.
