TEACHERS at the Goviefe-Todzi Evangelical Presbyterian Junior Secondary School (JSS) in the Hohoe District of the Volta Region have requested for their, transfer from the school because of what they have described as persistent attacks on teachers by the townsfolk.
In a petition jointly signed by the teachers to the Hohoe District Director of Education, they claimed that the situation “has instilled fear in all the teachers at the station” and ‘that they no longer felt safe.
“We would be very grateful if all of us could be transferred, since the situation is too dangerous for work,” they petitioned.
The teachers recounted this at about 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2007; a group of young men from the town attacked one teacher, Mr. Baeta Kitsi and inflicted wounds on him for no apparent reason.
The case, they said, was reported to the Have Police and the victim was admitted at the hospital for three days.
In another incident, the same group threatened to beat one female teacher, Miss Emelia Akwei, but what saved her was that she quickly rushed to the chief’s palace where she sought refuge.
On another occasion, the gang went to the house of the Primary Six teacher, Miss Peace Afenu, in the night in an attempt to rape her. Had it not been for the timely intervention of the landlord, the group would have succeeded in gang-raping her.
The two previous cases, they said, had been settled by the elders of the community “but to date none of the penalties imposed on the culprits has been paid and the elders cannot effect any further action”.
They, therefore, expressly asked for transfer from the place in order to “protect their dear lives”.
