Armed men have attacked fishermen at sea near Senya Bereku in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region, firing multiple warning shots, holding victims at gunpoint and making away with seven outboard motors, generators and other valuables.
The incident occurred during a night fishing expedition, leaving more than 50 fishermen stranded offshore after their equipment was seized.
Sources say the attackers stormed the fishing grounds under the cover of darkness, brandishing guns and other weapons.
The assailants reportedly held the fishermen at gunpoint for some time and discharged several warning shots before robbing them.
Speaking to Adom News, an eyewitness, Elder Samuel Fetteh, recounted the ordeal, stating that the armed men overpowered the fishermen and carried out the robbery without resistance.
According to him, the victims were left stranded about 4,000 metres offshore.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for Awutu Senya West, Kalala Nyamkye, confirmed the incident and said a rescue boat had been dispatched to bring the stranded fishermen safely back to shore.
The Deputy Minister for Works and Housing and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh, also addressed the situation, indicating that the Inspector-General of Police has deployed personnel from the military and the Marine Police to track down and arrest the suspects.
The attack has heightened concerns among fishing communities along the coast, with renewed calls for increased security patrols to protect livelihoods and ensure safety at sea.
