The Ministry of Health has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving eye health and preventing avoidable blindness with the arrival of the Orbis International Flying Eye Hospital in Ghana.
The state-of-the-art aircraft, which doubles as a mobile training and surgical centre, will support the training of local eye health professionals and enhance the delivery of quality eye care across the country.

Speaking at a welcoming ceremony in Accra on Tuesday, October 14, the Deputy Minister for Health, Professor Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, described the visit as a powerful symbol of innovation, compassion, and global partnership in healthcare.
She noted that Ghana’s long-standing collaboration with Orbis International has led to the training of several ophthalmologists, nurses, and biomedical engineers, while providing sight-saving treatment to thousands of Ghanaians over the years.

“The Flying Eye Hospital offers a unique opportunity for knowledge sharing and capacity building that will leave a lasting impact on our health system,” Prof. Ayensu-Danquah said.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted Ghana’s progress in eliminating trachoma and improving access to eye care, but acknowledged that cataracts, glaucoma, and uncorrected refractive errors remain major public health concerns.

She reaffirmed the government’s determination to tackle these challenges through key frameworks such as the National Health Policy (2020), the Universal Health Coverage Roadmap (2020–2030), and the forthcoming National Eye Health Policy.
Prof. Ayensu-Danquah expressed gratitude to Orbis International and its team of volunteer doctors, nurses, and engineers for their continued partnership with the Ministry in advancing eye health nationwide.

The ceremony was attended by officials from Aviance Ghana, the Ghana Airports Company Limited, heads of teaching hospitals, and several healthcare professionals.
