Residents of Piller 2 Sawmill in Dome-Kwabenya have received a much-needed supply of water from their Member of Parliament, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, to ease the burden of the ongoing water crisis in the area.
For several weeks, taps in the community have remained dry following a shutdown at the Dodowa Booster Station, a major water distribution facility.
The Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) announced on Saturday, August 23, that operations at the station had been halted after a fire outbreak, forcing engineers to embark on comprehensive repair works.
The disruption has left several communities in North-Eastern Accra, including Dome, Haatso, Atomic, Ashongman, Madina, Adenta, and Oyarifa, grappling with little to no water supply.
Speaking during the intervention, Ms. Akurugu said the water delivery was to support households in meeting their domestic needs until full supply is restored.
“I understand the frustration of my people, especially women and children, who are bearing the brunt of this shortage. While Ghana Water Ltd is working hard to resolve the technical challenges at Dodowa, it is important that we find temporary solutions to ease the suffering of our residents.
“This is why I stepped in to provide water for Piller 2 Sawmill and other parts of the constituency,” she stated.
The MP further appealed to residents to remain calm and assured them of her continued support throughout the period of the crisis.
GWL management has expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and reaffirmed that engineers are “working tirelessly and around the clock” to restore supply as soon as possible.
In the meantime, Ms. Akurugu urged the public to use water judiciously and reiterated her commitment to ensuring that Dome-Kwabenya residents have access to basic amenities, even in times of emergency.
