South Africa and the world’s most celebrated jazz artiste, ace trumpeter, and musical legend, Hugh Masekela, thrilled music enthusiasts to a night of exciting and soothing music at the Banquette Hall, State House on Saturday night. It was a night of extraordinary music, where the old fused with the new gave off a never to be forgotten experience – an experience with a legend who understood music and equally knew how to serve it – the right dose at the right time. This night had all it took to calm nerves, with uniquely arranged seats and some of the country’s finest personalities, including former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, in attendance; real music was ready to be served. The 73-year-old Hugh, after years of in-depth experience, knew how to party and he never fails to give a good toast – this night was no different. Saturday's concert was preceded by a red carpet and premiere of the movie, Soil at the Silverbird Cinema on November 18. The movie produced by Elinam Masekela, Hugh's son, and written and directed by, Adam Wilkinson, stars local actors including Ken Fiati, Solomon Sampa, Asuman Davis and Baaba Akude. Soil tells the story of a son of a chief, who after being banished from his village, is asked to return as his dying father’s last wish. It is woven around a blend of love, deceit, and African wit to deliver a truly on-screen African experience. Now back to the concert, Paulette of Mentor fame warmed the stage and the revelers, but it was sexy-sassy Efya who really turned up the heat. She looked hot on stage matching it up with a voice of a goddess. This talented songstress was just a pure genius on the night, she had a vocal magic that was so illuminating – a delight to watch and you can’t just get enough of her. She gave off some of her popular tunes including Little Things, Sexy Sassy Wahala and her latest, Get Away. The King of Burger-highlife, Gorge Darko was next with his iconic guitar. George Darko is not new to good rhythm, as a pioneer, his sense and skills of music can never be questioned. He is behind successful tunes such as Odo Colour, Akoo Te Brofo, Prempremsiwa, Obi Abayewa and a host of others – these songs he relived on stage.
