The Special Prosecutor nominee, Kissi Agyebeng says he intends to employ undercover investigation as one of his tactics to expose individuals who engage in corruption in the country.
Highlighting that corruption is very secretive and complex conduct to discover, Mr Agyebeng was optimistic that utilising methods employed by investigative journalist, Anas Amereyaw Anas, termed “The Anas Principle” will change the lifeless outcome of the country's fight against the menace.
He also believes that the principle will assist the Special Prosecutor in suing individuals caught on tape.
“I fully subscribe to Anas principle and I am going to use it. I have already stated that I will be engaging investigative journalists in respect to my work if given the nod,” he told Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday.
He explained that “I say so because, I have intimated that corruption is so secretive and complex and unless the participants are coming to you to report themselves, it is almost impossible to find out. Now, if someone can go underground and through a sting operation come out with some evidence which has probative value, I am all for it and I am going to use it.”
Mr Agyebeng, even before his nomination for the office of the Special Prosecutor was known to be the legal counsel for multiple award-winning undercover journalist, Anas Amereyaw Anas.
He did not only stand in court to defend his client, but he has also been an ardent supporter of the methodology implemented by the investigative journalist.
However, the Tamale North MP, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini cast doubt on the ability of the nominee to fully operate with the principle under the Akufo-Addo government.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo whilst in opposition pledged to use the “Anas principle” to uncover corrupt practices and officials in his government but he has failed to implement that since he took office in 2017.
He said instead, some “top” members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been “trying so hard” to discredit Anas Amereyaw Anas for some time now.
But, Mr Agyebeng stressed that the government has promised to be “co-operative”.
“Upon my consideration, I had full assurance. It is one of the reasons that I am sitting here that I am going to count on his full support in making this office successful and making it work and effective,” he stated.
