Ghanaian politician Gifty Oware-Mensah says she hates Manchester United.
Speaking in an interview with Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz, the current Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme in Ghana, mentioned that Manchester United caused her favorite player Sammy Kuffour to shed tears in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final.
Gifty Oware-Mensah, who is popularly known to be a football fanatic narrated that she supported German football giants Bayern Munich in that final because it had the likes of Ghanaian footballer Sammy Kuffour and other players of African descent in their team while Manchester United was known for not fielding African players.
However, Sammy Kuffour’s side lost by 2 goals to nil, leading the Ghanaian defender to shed uncontrollable tears.
Gifty Oware-Mensah in the interview mentioned that this incident was the genesis of her hate for the English side.
“I like him, because of him I cried. When I was a child Bayern and Manchester United played in a final in 1999 and they scored Bayern. Manchester United did not field Africans and Bayern had a lot of them.
“Sammy Kuffour was crying because he lost and I also cried and that was how I hated Manchester United.”
Gifty’s love for sports has always been evident throughout her years at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
She tells Doreen Avio that she used to be heavily involved in sporting activities.
“I played football, hockey, and badminton and was still doing politics. I wonder how I was able to do all that.”
