Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has revealed that he was compelled to home-school during his A Level education.
This was after he was denied admission by his dream schools: St. Augustine’s College, Mfantsipim School, and Adisadel College.
In an interview on the Career Trail, Prof Gyampo recalled his secondary school selection process, where he listed St. Augustine's College as his first choice, followed by Mfantsipim and Adisadel.
These schools are all A-listed in the secondary school rankings.

The academic told Irene Adubea Aning that he lost admission to his top choice and was unable to secure a spot in the other two schools.
"I wanted to go to St Augustine’s. So look at the schools that I chose; I chose St. Augustine’s first, Mfantsipim second, Adisadel third, so when Adisadel didn’t take me, Mfantsipim wasn’t going to take your second choice, the other school wasn’t also going to take me. So I didn’t get any of the schools," he said.
The Professor noted that he made this unfavourable selection because he had no one to mentor him during his academic endeavors.
"Throughout my life, my father went to live in London. I got linked up to my father, when he was almost about to die. But I cherish the effort that he reunited with me. But I am saying this to make a point that, I had no one. My mother didn’t know anything about the kind of things that I was studying; and every decision that have been taken in my life, whether good or bad, they were taken solely by myself," he explained.
Finding himself at a crossroads, he decided to do homeschooling where he eventually registered as an A Level student under Presbyterian Boys School, Legon, and took his final exams.
"I had to sit in the house to register as an A level under the PRESEC," he said.
Despite the odds, he achieved distinction in his A-level exams and gained admission to the University of Ghana.
