Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Rashid Pelpuo, has pledged to take firm action against child labour in Ghana, ensuring that children are removed from workspaces where they do not belong.
Speaking during his vetting in Parliament on Thursday, January 30, Mr Pelpuo emphasised his commitment to enforcing existing policies aimed at eliminating child labour.
“The ministry already has a policy approach to this, and I understand it aligns with our overall strategy to fight child labour and ensure that we liberate our children from the evil of being dragged into workplaces where they don’t belong,” he stated.
He assured he would thoroughly examine the current Ghana Accelerated Action Plan against Child Labour, promising not to “reinvent the wheel” but to review and strengthen the policy where necessary.
“If there is a need for a review, we will do so and ensure it is fully implemented,” he added.
Child labour is mainly a challenge in Ghana and other parts of Africa. Over the years the successive governments has implemented policies to tackle it. In Ghana, several NGOs are also working in the field to prevent more children from being victims.
