Renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama has revealed that a recent assault in Tamale has significantly affected his health, leaving him with speech difficulties and persistent sleeplessness, and forcing him to suspend work and cancel a series of international engagements.
Mr Mahama, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Red Clay Studio, was reportedly attacked alongside his uncle during a traffic-related incident on Saturday, March 21.
He believes the individuals involved were linked to the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, commonly referred to as “Black Maria”, although the unit’s leadership has denied any involvement.
The artist sustained dental injuries, including the loss of a tooth, and has since been treated and discharged from hospital. However, he says the physical and psychological effects of the incident remain profound.
Speaking to Citi FM, Mr Mahama disclosed that the assault has disrupted a packed international schedule.
“I was due to travel to London tonight to deliver lectures—from Cambridge to Oxford to the Royal Arts Institute in London—then continue to Helsinki, Milan and Venice. Unfortunately, I have had to cancel all these trips because I am unable to travel,” he said.
He further explained that lingering health challenges, including dental instability, rib pain and recurring headaches, have made it difficult for him to rest or carry out his usual activities.
“I cannot really sleep at night because my ribs are still very painful from the assault. I will be somewhat incapacitated in the studio as I focus on recovering my health over the next couple of months,” he added.
Mr Mahama warned that his recovery period could keep him away from active work for an extended time, affecting both his studio operations and international commitments.
He is expected to address the media on Monday, March 22, where he will provide further details surrounding the incident.
