Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, has expressed discontentment with the government’s interest and deep involvement in his daily criminal trial in court.
According to him, he never believed the government - particularly the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame would take keen interest in the criminal case against him.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV on Tuesday, August 22, Mr Quayson asserted that the Akufo-Addo government's interest in his trial was a stratagem to prevent him from winning the Assin North by-election.
“The daily trial, this came up during the campaign because the way I read into it, is to find ways and means to probably restrict me from holding on to my campaign and gaining the grounds for a win?
“It has even reaffirmed also that all along I never believed that the government can be involved in the court, now I’m convinced that an AG can just walk into the court and request that the file be moved,” he said.
James Gyakye Quayson was scheduled to face a criminal trial for alleged perjury and forgery during his campaigning for the Assin North by-election.
The Attorney General urged the court to hear the case on a day-to-day basis insisting the state was entitled to an expeditious trial.
This was in spite of concerns by lawyers for Mr Quayson requesting that he should be afforded a longer adjournment to enable him to campaign for the then by-election.
But Mr Quayson reported Mr Dame to the General Legal Council (GLC) for what he describes as “professional misconduct”.
In a letter to the Council, he stated that the AG’s conduct on the last adjourned date (July 19, 2023) where the AG failed to tell the court of an attachment referred by a witness is contrary to the professional conduct of lawyers.
To this end, Mr Quayson noted that the daily trial brought some pressure on him but that did not stop him from winning the Assin North by-election.
"I even made a joke and said they can give me a chamber in the court, and I would sleep there and still win the seat. I didn’t have to be on the grounds," Mr Quayson noted.
